STEM Friday

The May issue of Vanity Fair features a quirky interview with Hayden Planetarium director and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. In the interview, Dr. Tyson emphasizes the vital role STEM fields will play in our nation’s future. Dr. Tyson believes that, “in the 21st century the leading nations of the world will be those who embrace active investments in science and technology.” He sees America’s economic health and prosperity directly linked to America’s investments in STEM fields.

So, there’s no doubt about it, we’ve got to prepare our nation’s children for STEM fields. If you are not sure where to start as you explore STEM career fields with your students, check out Let’s Explore Science: Enterprise STEM by Shirley Duke. In Enterprise STEM, Duke explains in detail what Enterprise STEM is, describes scientists at work in their fields of specialization, emphasizes the role of teamwork and technology, and encourages students to seek out STEM fields for their careers. Close- up, full color photos of labs, computers, and scientists at work inspire students to explore these fields and make a difference in our future. She encourages kids to attend STEM summer camps and join after-school science clubs. Helpful sidebars tell kids what science and math classes they’ll need to take in high school to prepare them for college-level STEM courses. She shows the fascinating diversity that is STEM!
